Countries that are suffering from famine: (2026)

Sudan is currently experiencing famine conditions, particularly within parts of the Darfur region.

While "famine" is a specific technical classification (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC Phase 5), several other countries are experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity and "famine-like" conditions. These crises are primarily driven by conflict, displacement, economic collapse, and severe weather.

Countries and regions of highest concern include:

  • Sudan: Facing the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with famine confirmed in some areas.

  • Gaza (Occupied Palestinian Territories): Extremely high risk of famine due to ongoing conflict and severe restrictions on aid access.

  • South Sudan: Grappling with extreme hunger driven by conflict, historic flooding, and economic instability.

  • Haiti: Severe food insecurity exacerbated by intense gang violence and political instability.

  • Mali: Facing crisis-level food insecurity due to conflict and high food prices.

Many other nations, including Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Burkina Faso, are facing severe, life-threatening hunger crises that require urgent humanitarian intervention.
